Abarth 595 Competizione and 595 Turismo at the 2012 Paris Motor Show

We like the Abarth 500. It combines the cheeky retro appeal of the standard Fiat 500 with some extra-added styling and performance flair. And now there are two new versions, boasting a similar dose of the former, and a larger helping of the latter.

Paris Motor Show 2012 - live

What is it?

What are they, more like. Both versions of Abarth's mechanical Jack Russell Terrier receive the standard 500's optional Esseesse kit, boosting power beyond the usual 135hp. One is style focussed, the other more intent on creating a hardcore driving persona.

What's hot?

The new 595 models both receive uprated suspension dampers, larger 17-inch alloys and some natty aluminium flashes inside. However, the Turismo (pictured) also boasts leather upholstery, while the sportier Competizione gets a noisy 'Monza' exhaust, cross-drilled front and rear brake discs and some figure hugging fabric seats.

What's not?

Given that the larger, more powerful and faster Renaultsport Clio 200 - a car in the class above - costs £17,135, and the MINI Cooper S (arguably not known for its value for money) will set you back £18,180, the duo of 595s look a touch on the pricey side...

How much and when?

Abarth will relieve you of £17,725 for the 595 Turismo and £18,725 for the Competizione. Want either model in convertible form? That'll be £19,625 and £20,625 respectively then, please. If you want Abarth's MTA semi-auto 'box, it'll cost you another £1,300. Both models are available to order now.

Anything else I should know?

Both cars get a massaged power output - up to 160hp from the 1.4-litre turbocharged four-pot. Abarth claims these two warmed-up 500s will sprint to 62mph in 7.4 seconds and top out at 131mph.
